  1. I would like to find more about the President's Environmental Youth Awards on pg 125 in the book it said that covers recycling and science.

To tell you the truth there is no much for grades lower than 5th grade :(

    1. And in high school - there is way too much for them to do it all! Maybe there could be a partnership with middle/high schools with the elementary? I know for my robotics team, we are planning on working with some middle school kids after school. So, while you may not be able to do actual contests, you can still be involved.

    2. In respone to Mrs. Cruz, you are so right. Most of the competitions in this section are for older ages. I am also interested in the Environmental Youth Awards. I think getting a certificate signed by the President would be thrilling for my kiddos.

    3. I agree of the Presidental Environmental Youth Awards. I put this down to do this year. I think the students would really enjoy this project. They are very aware of the environment and recycling. The certificate would be a bonus at the end of the contest.

  2. P 87: Mandelbrot Competition: http://www.mandelbrot.org As a mathematician, I am always looking for ways to incorporate math in different scenarios. I think if the students see that math is essential outside of the math classroom, they will want to learn it and remember more of what they learn.

P 89: Mathcounts: http://www.mathcounts.org In Oklahoma, I helped with Mathcounts and my children really enjoyed it. I found it to be exciting and very competitive. I think my students at SHS would love it.

P 90: Math Leagues: http://www.mathleague.com many of my students will enter physics with only Algebra 1. I think if we could get the Algebra 1 kit and worked with some of these kids, they may get more excited about math and its applications.

  3. 1.President's Environmental Youth Award P125. At my school, teaching students to respect the environment and our natural resources is stressed. Of course we recycle and honor Earth Day, but this competition goes beyond that.

2.Odyssey of the Mind P121. Problem solving is a skill that our students must have. This competition would help tremendously with that.

  4. I would like to find out more on Sea World/Busch Gardens/Fujifilm Environmental Excellence Awards on page 130. The site says it recognizes students/teachers who preserve the environment at the grassroots level. I would be interested to see what the Fujifilm/Sea World would do with this project.

    1. This would be good because Sea World is just down the road in San Antonio and maybe there could be a field trip.

  5. I would like to learn more about the Presidential Environmental Youth Awards p.125. Students are always seeing advertisements in the community to GO Green and be environmentally aware. So why not allow students to opportunity to be creative and show how they help the environment.

  6. pg. 87 Letters About Literature Competition
I would like to research this. I work with Creative GT writers in the summer and this would opportunity to bring this type of competition into the summer program as well as regular ed classroom.
pg.114 National Schools Project poetry Contest
Poetry is becoming so important in testing situations. Students are required to study poetry in a way that has never been tested and to be able to write their own is very beneficial. Competitions seem to bring out the best in many too.

  8. In response to Tracey Jensen: I like your suggestion of a partnership between middle and high school. Coming from Elementary, I had hoped to form a partnership with middle school and now that I am going to middle, it would be nice to collaborate with older students.
