Session 2 - Question 3

From this section of reading what ideas or web-sites would you like to learn more? Why? Give page numbers for each site.

14 comments:

  1. P 66: Future City Competition: http://www.futurecity.org. While this is for 7th and 8th graders, I would like to see if my Robotics team could sponsor it.

P 69: Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament: http://web.mit.edu. I have two former students currently at Harvard. I love math, and while I doubt we would ever go, it would be fun to learn more about it.

P 72: Intel Science Talent Search: http://www.sciserv.org I have many gifted future scientists and I am always looking for ways to get them to write! The number of scholarships would motivate my kiddos.
P102: National Engineering Design Challenge: http://www.jets.org We have few handicapped students at our school and I think our kids could be more sympathetic for those with physical limitations. I think doing this challenge would help them become more well-rounded people.

    1. Stacey L- I would like to check into the Science Talent Search- it appears that it would be a good way for the students to write along with experiments. I have not looked into the National Engineering Design Challenge but seems like a good one. I have read the students the book "Out of my mind" and this site seems to fit in.

    2. Tracey- I think the MIT Math contest would be really interesting to just go and be a spectator. Can you image all brilliant students attending and competing. I know they would definitely teach me some things. Keep it as goal for the future!

    3. The Future City website is a good one for over achiever fifth graders. I will investigate this one further to use with my kids (one in particular) for next year,

  2. There are many sites that I would like to learn more about, but several that came to my interest are:

Pg. 121 Nob Yoshigahara Puzzle Design Competition: http://www.johnrausch.com. I have many gifted students and I am always lookin for new ways for them to learn. I belive that puzzles and mechanical puzzles really allow for way to learn. I would like to learn more on this.

Also, on page page 121-123 Odyssey of the Mind http://www.odysseyofthemind.com. My son did this many years ago and I would like to get more information now. It was a great way to create and solve problems but it was also very rigid on the rules. I would like to re-visit this now that I am teaching older students.

  4. In this section of the reading I was interested in a lot of the competitions/sites, but a lot of them had bad sites and I had to do a search for them. It was a little frustrating, but nevertheless I found some sites worth looking deeper into.

The Intel Science Talent Search (pg. 72); International Brain Bee (pg.. 73), and Junior Science and Humanities Symposia (pg.81), primarily because of the high awards/benefits could help pay for a student's college or help. I know a lot of the students I have worked with are extremely gifted but might not be financially well off and a chance at a full ride (Talent Search and Humanities) could really motivate them to go the extra mile.

  5. International Olympiad p.74- I think anything that will encourage students to learn science and make science fun is worth trying. I think it will stretch the minds of the GT students while encouraging other students to become more interested in science.
Media Festival p. 75- Kids know so much about technology so why not let them create a product and then inter it into a contest. I think the students will really soar in this contest and come up with some really original products.

  6. pg. 114 NAtional Schools Project Poetry Contest was a website I intend to pursue this year. A college professor whom I teach summer school with also suggested this site and said it is great for all ages. The poems do not have to be ridiculously long, especially for the little ones, and their works are actually published in a magazine. Because it si not due til March they ahve most of the year to practice and perfect. I am definitely going to see if my writers this year are candidates!

  7. pg. Kids Philosophy Slam is a website that I would like to know more about. This year in our class blog we talked a lot about quotes and what they meant to us. I'm definitely going to look more into his website.

  8. P85: Laws of Life Essay Contest. I think this sounds like a great way to promote and reflect upon character education and values. Perhaps this could even be integrated with our “Character without Question” award.

P82: Kids Are Authors. I like the emphasis on teamwork in this competition, something I'm always working on with students.
